Our rabbis teach us that our three forefathers each represent a positive quality that each Jew should strive for.
Avraham represents kindness, Yitzchak represents strength, and Yaakov represents truth.
Interestingly enough, when Hashem “tests” our fathers, he tests these very same qualities.
Avraham is tested in his ability to sacrifice his own son, the exact opposite of kindness. Yitzchak is tested in his ability to be sacrificed, the exact opposite of what we perceive as strength. And in this week’s Parsha, Parshat Toldot, it is Yaakov’s turn to be tested. Behind the intense story of lentil soup and trickery is the quintessential test on Yaakov’s best quality, truth, Yaakov must lie to his father.
All three of our forefathers pass their tests. In life, Hashem will test each and every person and make things hard for him/her, but keep in mind, that the very same characteristic that may seem like it is impossible for you to keep up with is your very best quality.
Find a weakness, work on it, make it a strength.
Shabbat Shalom, and stay inspired!
