Haman’s Second – By Eli Milstein

There’s a gemara in Sanhedrin 79b that says the great grandchildren of Haman learned Torah in Bnei Barak. We know that nothing in this world which is infinitely planned happens by accident, or by chance, so what merit did Haman have to be deserving of his great grandchildren learning Torah?

When Achashverosh asked Haman what should be done to the man who the king wishes to honor, Haman thought it was himself. Then, when he found out that it was really Mordechai he knew that his reign of terror was over. Haman realized that evil had once again failed in the face of good. This caused Haman, a man who was completely okay with wiping out an entire race of people which numbered about 25 million, had a thought for one second that maybe Hashem is truly emet. The thought lasted only one second, but then was gone and Haman returned to his evil ways of trying to destroy the Jews as efficiently as possible. This second of a doubt that Haman had against his evil ways affected him in more ways than he even knew. It gave him the merit to have his great grandchildren learn Torah in Bnei Barak.

This is an incredible lesson to every person all over the world.

We often may think, “I’m not such a great person,” Or, “I am not on the level of the holy Rabbis.” These thoughts may cause us to be discouraged in our quest for a relationship with Hashem, but this lesson teaches us that even a man who was one of the most wicked people in the history of the world, had one holy thought for one second in his life, and he merited to have his great grandchildren learn Torah in Bnei Barak.

Every good action, or even a good thought, that any of us may have can have positive affects beyond our wildest imagination. Anybody who thinks that they are not so holy should never get discouraged and realize that they have done so many incredible and holy things in their life, and that there is always room to grow and come closer to Hashem.
